Position: Medical Doctor

You will work alongside the already existing team of Doctors. Your primary role as a doctor will be to apply your medical knowledge and skills to diagnose, facilitate prevention and management of disease. You will work on wards and out-patient clinic as well as refer patients to a wide range of other appropriate health care professionals, including nurses, radiographers, pharmacists and physiotherapists.

Essential Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will depend on your specialty. However, the following responsibilities are likely to be carried out, regardless of your specialty on a daily basis

  • Monitoring and providing general care to patients on hospital wards and in the outpatient clinic i.e. drug administration, analyzing patients' symptoms and ordering exploratory tests, carrying out general health checks before surgery, checking patients’ progress and making any necessary alternations to their treatment regime
  • Admitting patients requiring special care, further investigations and treatment;
  • Examining and talking to patients and their families to diagnose their medical conditions;
  • Carrying out specific procedures, e.g. performing operations and specialist investigations;
  • Making notes, both as a legal record of treatment and for the benefit of other health care professionals;
  • Liaising with other medical and non-medical staff in the hospital to ensure quality treatment;
  • Assessing, planning, evaluating and implementing treatment programmes that promote health and well-being (promoting health education on sexual and other health issues)
  • Providing advice and guidance for patients and community members at risk of developing a long-term condition as appropriate
  • Undertaking managerial responsibilities such as planning the workload and staffing of the department
  • Teaching (junior doctors and medical students), as well as auditing and research
  • Work with other health care professionals to diagnose, monitor, manage and treat long-term conditions such as HIV/AIDS, using methods in line with national and local policies and practice needs including non-drug-based treatment methods
  • Work with patients in order to support adherence to prescribed treatments
  • Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care
  • Support and manage health care needs of vulnerable and marginalised individuals including; street children, sex workers, men who have sex with men (MSM), widows and those who are HIV/AIDS positive

  • Ability to respond to demanding and complicated patient situations.
  • Effective communication with other doctors as well as patients.
  • Confidentiality. Maintain concise, timely and accurate confidential records of patients.
  • Ability to prioritize patients according to their clinical needs.
  • Good time management skills to balance the clinical and administrative duties.
  • Ability and willingness to work very long hours, often under tight pressure.
  • Ability to solve difficult problems.
  • Should be able to challenge decisions where need be.
  • Strong decision-making and practical skills.


Education and Qualifications

  • Degree in Medicine.
  • General practice after graduation in medicine.
